Knights Win Again, Move to Round Three

The Harker Heights Knights defeated Royce City 38-17 to advance
By: Todd Martin
It’s going to be turkey and football for the Harker Heights Knights following a convincing 38-17 victory Friday over the Royce City Bulldogs at Waco ISD Stadium.
This is just the third Knights team to advance to the third round of the state playoffs. The others were back in 2000 and 2003.
Praising the team at game’s end Friday, coach Jerry Edwards said that no Knights team has ever gone to the fourth round.
That’s the goal in front of the Knights now as they prepare for a regional semi-final matchup next Friday against Spring DeKaney, a Houston area school that advanced after defeating Cypress Falls.
The Knights and the DeKaney Wildcats meet in a 6 p.m. game the Friday after Thanksgiving at Baylor’s McLane Stadium.
The winner of that game advances to a regional final, a step away from the Class 6A-Division II state quarterfinals.
At 11-1, the Knights have tied the 2003 team with the most wins ever for Harker Heights.
It was senior running back Re’Shaun Sanford that starred again for the Knights. He scored three rushing touchdowns and a fourth on a pass from junior quarterback Dylan Plake.
Sanford scored first at 5:29 in the first quarter, taking the snap from center and rumbling into the endzone for the 7-0 start.
At 4:32 in the second quarter, Royce City scored a field goal to close to 7-3.
With 2 minutes remaining in the quarter, Sanford found the end zone again, bringing the score to 14-3. With just 20 seconds left in the half, the hard-working running back broke a long run, scoring again to close the half at 21-3.
The Bulldogs wouldn’t give in. At 4:05 in the third quarter, Royce City scored their first touchdown to bring the score to 21-10.
At 1:25 in the third quarter, Plake connected for his second touchdown pass of the night, finding sophomore receiver Tyler Johnson, extending the Knights’ lead to 28-10, which was the score entering the fourth quarter.
With just over 10 minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs appeared to score on a halfback pass, but a penalty brought the ball back. On the next play, Harker Heights senior Marcus Moultrie intercepted a pass to end the Royce City possession.
At 6:20 left in the game, Sanford scored his fourth touchdown of the night, this time on a reception from Plake for a 35-10 lead.
With 5 minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs struck again, this time on a long run to the endzone to pull to 35-17.
With just 1:47 remaining in the game, junior kicker Jai’den Fletcher kicked a 31-yard field goal for the final points of the game.
The Knights celebrated with a trophy presentation at midfield.
Like the week before, a loud group of fans cheered on the Knights throughout the chilly evening and the cheerleaders, Red Brigade Band and Crimson Belles dance team kept spirits high.
