A principal can set the tone for a campus, leading students and staff members, communicating with parents and other guests and performing practically any other job at a school.

Killeen ISD Superintendent John Craft thanked principals during the honors and recognitions portion of the regular Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday, noting that October is Principal Appreciation Month.

The job of principal, said Craft, is more challenging than ever as he praised those who serve across Killeen ISD as instructional leaders.

This year, there are two new principals in KISD and they represented all their peers at the board meeting.

Cassandra Spearman, principal at Hay Branch Elementary School, has returned to the district. She previously was principal at Ira Cross Elementary School.

Tanya Dockery, new principal at Timber Ridge Elementary School, is an 11-year KISD educator in her first year as a principal.

She agreed Wednesday that there are numerous challenges to the job, but said the rewards far outweigh the difficulties. She had no trouble deciding her favorite part of her day.

“I love my time at Timber Ridge,” she said. “The staff has been so welcoming. The best part for me is getting to hug on my kids.”

She equated her job’s demands to those of all the school’s administrators and teachers.

“The biggest challenge we have is to make sure that kids have everything they need every day,” Dockery said.

“Teachers have to do a lot,” she said, noting that administrators jump in at every point in the day.

“From serving breakfast to tutoring to leading instruction there are a lot of responsibilities,” she said.

For Dockery, a special moment came this year when she posed for a staff photo and she said it represented a dream come true.

“I’ve dreamed of this since I was 6 years old,” she said. “Most kids when they play school dream of being a teacher. I dreamed from the beginning of being a principal. This is a dream come true.”

Killeen ISD joined the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the American Federation of School Administrators designating October to recognize contributions of school principals.
